Why Justice MArch ?
Justice March is a peaceful civic initiative organised by the Peaceful Actions Platform, a broad coalition bringing together many partner organisations, civil society actors, human rights defenders, lawyers, victims’ groups and volunteers from across Europe. It began in Strasbourg in 2022 with a clear call to the European Court of Human Rights: to deliver long-awaited judgments in cases concerning serious and systematic human rights violations in Türkiye.
For many victims, Strasbourg had become the last place where they could still hope to be heard. Thousands of people were waiting for justice after years of dismissals, prosecutions, imprisonment, social exclusion and family suffering. The first gatherings aimed to remind the Court that delayed justice has real consequences for real people.
In 2023, the European Court of Human Rights delivered its landmark judgment in the Yalçınkaya v Türkiye case. The ruling confirmed that Türkiye’s approach had violated fundamental rights and raised issues affecting many similar cases. Yet the judgment was not effectively implemented in Türkiye. Courts and authorities continued practices that deepened legal uncertainty and prolonged injustice for thousands of people.
For this reason, the focus of Justice March expanded. The call was no longer only addressed to the Court, but also to the Council of Europe, which is responsible for supervising the implementation of ECtHR judgments. Justice March now calls on European institutions to ensure that human rights standards are upheld not only in legal texts, but also in practice.
As state repression in Türkiye widened and affected more communities, the message also became broader. Justice cannot be selective. Injustice against one group weakens the rights of all. Justice March therefore stands with all victims of state repression in Türkiye, regardless of background, belief, identity or political view.
